Sinharaja (vergin rain forest of Sri Lanka)

Sinharaja forest reserve is one of the least disturbed and biologically unique lowland rain forest in Sri lanka. This forest covers an extent of about 11187 hectares from east to west .The length of the forest is about 21km and width from North to South is about 3.7km.It was declared a Man and Biosphere Reserve (MAB) in 1978,as representative of tropical humid evergreen forest Eco system in Sri Lanka and has been recognized by UNESCO as part of it?s International Network of Biosphere reserves. It was declared a National wilderness area in 1988 and lately a world heritage site in 1989.It is situated in the southwest lowland wet zone of the country in the districts of Ratnapura, Galle and Matara. The average annual temperature of Sinharaja is 23.6 C. Annual rainfall is more than 2500mm.The rain fall is well distributed during two monsoons, May to July and October to December.

Science fiction writer Sir Arthur C Clark passed away











Science fiction writer Sir Arthur C Clark passed away at private hospital in Colombo in Sri Lanka around 1.30 am (19-03-2008) after suffering a bout of breathing difficulties. He was 90.
He was most famous for his novel 2001: A Space Odyssey, and for collaborating with director Stanley Kubrick on the film of the same name.

Anura Bandaranayake passes away





Anura Priyadarshi Solomon Dias Bandaranayake (February 15, 1949 – March 16, 2008)


Anura Bandaranayake, the brother of former SL President Chandrika Kumaratunga and the son of two former Prime Ministers of Sri Lanka, passed away

He was the son of former Prime Ministers Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranayake and Sirimavo Ratwatte Dias Bandaranayake and the brother of former President Chandrika Bandaranayake Kumaratunga and Sunethra Bandaranaike, philanthropist. His father, Solomon, while serving as prime minister, was assassinated when Bandaranayake was 10 years old.


The funeral of late MP Anura Bandaranayake will take place at Horagolla on Wednesday.
